Ecca Vandal

Ecca Vandal doesn’t just push boundaries as an artist - she bashes them in with a sledge hammer.

After screaming into our collective consciousness in 2014 with the release of debut single ‘White Flag,’ the Melbourne singer/producer/performer forced the Australian music scene and media to stand at attention, captivating fans and critics alike with her unique attitude, style and swag of influences.

2015 saw her become a triple j mainstay, following up the success of ‘White Flag’ with a barrage of adrenalin charged tracks including guitar rocker ‘Battle Royal,’ the hip hop infused ‘Father Hu$$la,’ and the surprisingly soulful yet gritty ‘End Of Time.’ Each new single drew the veil back a little further, revealing a deeper and broader range of influences and obliterating the previous notion we’d formed about Ecca Vandal the artist. All of which was the result of a constant pursuit of evolution in the face of succumbing to the expectations of the music industry.

“Whenever there are expectations, or whenever there is a formula set, that’s the time to change direction,” she explains. “That is essentially the essence of this - pivoting whenever anyone senses there’s a trend, or challenging myself to go in a different direction.”

It’s that refusal to remain static that leads us to where we find ourselves now, in the aftermath of Vandal once again skating off the expected path and dropping her debut EP End Of Time without warning. Loaded with the one-two combo of previous singles ‘Battle Royal’ and the title track, the release is fleshed out with three new cuts – ‘Truth 2 Trade,’ ‘Divided’ and ‘Running At People Exiting’ – all adding to her already incredibly impressive repertoire and exploring the peripheries of her unique perspective on Australian art and culture.

South African born with Sri Lankan Heritage, Vandal’s parents left South Africa after Apartheid in the late 1980s for the safer and more stable environment of Melbourne, where she was free to explore her interests in jazz and later the hip hop, rock and punk-rock that would all combine to inform her current signature sound. It’s a heritage and history that surfaces in her lyricism and musicianship, as well as inspiring her resistance to being pigeonholed. It also motivated the boldness that saw her release her debut EP without the ostentatiousness one would expect from such a hyped artist, instead choosing to keep faith in the approach of her punk rock heroes by delivering the End Of Time straight to her fans without ceremony.

The End Of Time Tour will now see her embark on her first ever Australian headline shows, the perfect culmination of 18 months on the road playing everywhere from underage punk rock parties with Australian hardcore stalwarts the Hard-Ons and opening for electro rock gods The Prodigy (in just her third ever performance), all the way through to performing on the main stage at Splendour In The Grass and being hand-picked to open for Mercury Prize winners and fellow boundary destroyers the UK’s Young Fathers.

Nick Barker

Nick Barker has been a fixture on the Melbourne Music scene for more than half his life, from the “little band” scene of the early 1980’s to the his public debut in 1989 with Nick Barker and the Reptiles, then his acclaimed first solo album Happyman which spawned the Triple J Hottest One Hundred top 20 placed “Timebomb”.

Solo or with his band, he is an outstanding performer evidenced by his many recordings and live performances. Nick is a working musician, a ‘tradesman’, and for the past 20  years has toured Australia, the UK and Europe regularly.

One of Nick’s greatest attributes is his ability to read his audiences and the humorous and thoughtful delivery of his music.  Musically, Nick does not fall into one specific category and this is not surprising after such an enduring and diverse career.

Nick’s latest project is  a band with his long time friend Justin Garner called “ The Heartache State” whose self titled album was released in July 2015.

Jimi Hocking

Jimi Hocking’s affinity with the guitar started as a boy when his father, Kevin Hocking (a well known pianist and composer) realised that Jimi was more interested in Chuck Berry than his piano lessons, and so presented him with a primitive acoustic guitar for Christmas. These humble beginnings led to an ongoing career in music, with Jimi playing electric guitar, acoustic guitar and mandolin.

The mid-1980s was when Jimi cut his teeth, playing hundreds of pub shows fronting bands like The Astroboys and The Astros. In the late-1980s and early-1990s Jimi had his own career as a hard rock artist. Known as Jimi the Human he released two recordings ... the Top 20 live album No Turning Back and Living in Luxury in 1993.

The combination of high speed picking and blues bends on these albums left an indelible impression on many guitarists ... including Joe Satriani, Edgar Winter and George Thorogood, all with whom Jimi toured. In fact, when Jimi played a little guitar to blues legend BB King in 1989 (while he visited Australia with U2) BB exclaimed, “I’ve been watching you ... and you're good!”.

Even before the 'Jimi the Human' era, Jimi had a reputation as a gun guitarist, so when misfortune struck seminal Oz rockers The Angels in 1988, he was asked to join the band to perform guitar duties on their Live Line concert tour ... which he did with only one rehearsal!

In the mid-1990s Jimi was hired as lead guitarist for the popular Australian rock band The Screaming Jets. For four years Jimi toured with the band and played lead guitar, mandolin and keyboards on their 1995 Top 5 Self-titled album, as well as the follow up release World Gone Crazy, receiving two gold records for his efforts.

Even while with the Jets, Jimi was still writing and performing his own material, releasing his solo acoustic album Standard Bohemian in 1998. In 1999 Jimi defied his critics and released his first blues album, ‘Blue Guitar’ … despite pressure to keep to the rock stage, Jimi insisted he would play the music that was close to his heart. The results speak for themselves, with ‘Blue Guitar’ selling as well today as it did when it was released, Jimi's switch from rock to blues has been vindicated many times over since then!

The acoustic album Based On Actual Events was released in 2001, and Jimi also won his third 'CAV' best acoustic performer award. However, not content as a local icon, 2001 was also the year Jimi first headed to New York, for well-received gigs in Manhattan and New Jersey. He was also invited to sit in with artists at Bleecker Street's popular ‘Terra Blues’ club, demonstrating his flawless ability to "improv" as well as peform his own material.

In 2002, Jimi was busy on the Australian festival circuit, but he also put his ‘Biscuit Boy’ studios through its paces. He recorded, played on and produced Dave Gleeson's (of The Screaming Jets fame) first solo album Wanted Man, while also chalking up a solo blues album. Give Jimi Some Love! features original songs, plus a couple of blues classics given Jimi's unique touch.

2003 and 2004 saw Jimi on the road, travelling many miles throughout Australia and the USA. He also released a compilation of his 'rock' days titled The Spectre 7 Years - a whole bunch of re-recorded, re-mastered tracks plus some great live material from the era. Jimi also took out the coveted MBAS 'Blues Performer of the Year' for 2004.

Certainly 2005 was a remarkable year for Jimi. Crowned winner of the Solo/Duo section of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, USA, Jimi subsequently embarked on a comprehensive US tour, appearing at festivals and clubs to great reviews. Meanwhile his blues albums were added to play lists in the USA, Europe and London.

2006 began with the release of The Ultimate Bootleg (vs2). Jimi's 10th album was a re-make of his first independent acoustic album, featuring all new recordings of original songs and bonus tracks. 2006 also marked the 20th anniversary of Jimi's first indie release, Astros self-titled (and vinyl) EP, which still sounds so fresh, it's like you're in the same room as the band!

2007 saw Jimi release Blue Mandolin, his first album of mandolin-based tunes. Jimi's unique stlye of 'blues mando' made an instant impact on the local scene, with Jimi performing mandolin tunes in a number of guises: solo, trio, ensemble, even as a part of his electric blues shows!

Mercury was in retrograde during 2008, which for Gemini's meant not much new was supposed to happen! Even so Jimi continued tracking his latest blues album, and spent the rest of the year on the road, with memorable appearances with his mandolin at the Port Fairy and Woodford Folk Festivals, to name but a couple. He was also named Producer of the Year for his work on Blue Mandolin and best Male Blues Artist at the VicTas Blues Awards. A slow year indeed!

In 2009 Jimi finally settled on tracks for his long awaited 12th studio album Electric Mojo Machine, an album that saw Jimi fall in love all over again with his Les Paul Gold Top, the guitar it all started on. Somehow he managed to get it recorded (and re-recorded!), mixed and released by late in the year - all this while averaging a dozen live sets of blues a week! He also appeared at a swag of festivals including Woodford in QLD, Queenscliff in VIC and, a bit further from home, the Himalayan Blues Festival in Kathmandu!

2010 and Jimi was on the road with his Blues Machine promoting the Mojo Machine album, and back with bandmates Screaming Jets for some rockin' shows, including a tour support to Jimi's all time favourite rockers, Status Quo.

2011 was another year on the road for Jimi, visiting festivals all over Australia and taking his Blues Machine to India and Nepal. In January the band recorded a live show at the Nighthawk Blues Cafe and, with David Briggs at the helm, Live In The Moment became Jimi's 15th record and his first live album in 20 years.

Since 2012 life has been a blur of touring, recording, re-releases and special appearances but 2016 saw much of that hard work culminate with Screaming Jets releasing their first album in eight years. Chrome has been acclaimed by fans and media alike. To counter that rock tour de force, Jimi has also released an intimate EP Home Cooking with his dad Kevin, the man who got the whole ball rolling in the first place.

If all that ain't enough, Jimi has also written music for film and TV, and recorded and played for many other artists in a career now spanning over 25 years. He continues to write, record and perform with astonishing enthusiasm ... but he wouldn't have it any other way, after all, "the blues is for life!"

Ash Davies

Ashley Davies is regarded as one of Australia’s most innovative and finest drummer/songwriters

Throughout a career spanning 2 decades, Davies has covered many miles of rich musical terrain and clocked up a dazzling score of credits to his name.

As one half of Matt Walker and Ashley Davies, he won an ARIA award and opened for the likes of Bob Dylan and Patti Smith, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Cruel Sea, Gomez, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Cowboy Junkies, ZZ Top, Cold Chisel and Junior Brown.

As a drummer who is able to adapt to many styles of drumming Davies has recorded, toured, and played live with some of Australia’s great and well-known artists: Jeff Lang, Chris Whitley, The Waifs, Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil), Lisa Miller, Dave Larkins (Dallas Crane), Chris Wilson and The Crown of Thorns, The Backsliders. As a passionate believer in nurturing fresh talent he’s also recorded with artists just starting to make an impact on the industry: Jordie Lane, Luluc, Abbie Cardwell, Rory Ellis.

As a composer, his music has featured in major Australian films such as Somersault, Australian Rules and the television series The Silence. He has written soundtracks for films by Melbourne filmmaker Bayden Findlay. Mia Dyson and Matt Walker have also performed and recorded songs written by him.

In 2001 Davies launched his CD and live road show of Ned Kelly, which he produced with noted historian Ian Jones. This project tells the story of the legendary Australian outlaw and bushranger. The album won the 2001 Best Australian Debut CD in Rhythms Magazine Reader’s Poll. When it premiered at the Apollo Bay Music Festival it played to packed houses and was voted the highlight of the festival by the Melbourne Age newspaper. It has since toured to several Australian festivals including the prestigious Perth International Arts Festival.

With his new solo project Muscle Drum Music Volumes 1 and 2, Ashley Davies comes to the fore as one of this country's great drummer-songwriters. A thrilling rhythmic adventure, Muscle Drum Music was recorded almost entirely by Davies on two drum kits, guitar, and harmonica, with no loops or samples. True solo recordings, written from the drums up and built on their own driving grooves.

Nikki Nickols

Nikki has been singing professionally since she was a child when she was performing weekly in Brian and the Juniors. Early teens singing in VENUES all over Australia and Indonesia, sharing dressing rooms with strippers and stealing the left over wiener schnitzels for breakfast in dilapidated hotel rooms.

“One day I got a call to be JOHN FARNHAM’s backing vocalist in the newly formed JOHN FARNHAM ‘rock’ band. I was ecstatic! Toured with John for a few years and recorded the ‘WHISPERING JACK’ album with him. The highlight was touring with STEVIE WONDER. The first night he called us up to sing with him, I was placed behind Stevie as we all did a conga line across the stage singing Master Blaster. I was so excited with my arms around his waist, I forgot he was blind and was meant to help steer him around the stage. Oops, I steered him right into the foldback box with him tumbling over and me on top of him”.

Toured with SUSIE QUATRO, AUSTRALIAN CRAWL, and all over the world with KYLIE MINOGUE. “Woh, do I have some stories about these tours, sooooo much fun!” Nikki performed at the JOHN LENNON MEMORIAL CONCERT in Liverpool with such artists as CYNDI LAUPER, LENNY KRAVITZ, JOE COCKER, HALL & OATES, and CHRISTOPHER (Superman) REEVE. Was so excited to receive a personal thankyou letter from YOKO ONO.

In New York Nikki was set to sign with Atlantic Records. She was being described as the next SHERYL CROWE however being unable to move to New York due to family commitments, this venture was terminated.

Nikki starred alongside WENDY STAPLETON and DEBRA BYRNE in “GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS” the highly acclaimed cabaret show. “I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much as I did working with these two amazing girls. We had a ball and boy did we get up to mischief.”

Nikki has recorded albums before, when interviewed she explained “I recorded an album of heavy rock male orientated songs from Jimi Hendrix to Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Cream. Heaps of fun and then I had been studying Japanese on and off for about 8 years, so I wrote an album about parts of Australia in Japanese. Now that was an amazing challenge!”

“BRIDESMAID” is Nikki’s first independent original album. She says, “Throughout my career, I have toured with fabulous bands and artists as a backing vocalist but have always felt a little bit like a bridesmaid, so I thought that would be the title of my album.”
